Here's my (probably only, sadly) post for Solarpunk Aesthetic Week! Originally made for Andrewism's 2023 Solarpunk Art Collab!
This digital painting depicts the Southern Great Lakes Ecoregion, within the Interior Plateau & Southern Great Lakes Forests Bioregion, within the Temperate Broadleaf and Mixed Forest Biome.
I chose a suburban setting for this piece because I've not yet seen a Solarpunk artwork that features this. I'm aware of the problems with the suburbs, but it seems to me more sustainable to try to adapt them than to demolish them and start over. So instead of lawns I've depicted beds of native Indiana plants, including but not limited to:
Amsonia Tabernaemontana (Eastern Bluestar)
Spartina Pectinata (Prairie Cordgrass)
Echinacea Purpurea (Purple  Coneflower.
The roofs of the houses are either white to help reflect heat, or green roofs. Some of the houses are equipped with solar panels on the south sides, and one is shown with a greenhouse on that side as well.
While perhaps not explicitly ecologically focused, I have shown there to be more art in this setting than is usually found in american suburbia. The sidewalk has a mural painted with hydrochromic paint, which only appears while it is raining. The houses are painted bright colors (white or greige is  considered  'Normal' ) and are occasionally decorated with murals.
This particular area is among the cloudiest in the so-called U.S.A. To reflect that, the weather is overcast and it is currently raining.
Hope y'all enjoy this, and Happy Solarpunk Aesthetic Week!

Excerpt from this story from Grist:
Demand for steel is on the rise globally, driven by population growth and the expanding economies in developing nations. The material will also be important to the green energy transition, forming the backbone of infrastructure like wind turbines, solar panels, and hydroelectric dams. Every part of the steel supply chain is heavily polluting, and the places in the U.S. where the steel industry is concentrated are disproportionately low-income and nonwhite, highlighting yet another instance in which the promises of development and climate solutions come at a steeper cost for some communities. What’s more, the country’s steel production is dominated by just two companies: U.S. Steel and Cleveland Cliffs.
For both companies, much of their production begins with taconite, a low-grade iron ore mined in the northeast Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range, which is processed into pellets that get shipped to the steel mills of Gary, Indiana. The extraction of the ore from taconite rock releases a slew of toxic pollutants into the air, including mercury, lead, and dioxins. In this region, the most concerning of these emissions is mercury.
Studies have connected mercury to a litany of negative health effects. It’s a neurotoxin that can interfere with brain development in unborn children and an endocrine disruptor that can weaken the immune system. Scientists have yet to determine a quantity of mercury that is safe for human consumption. One recent study found that there is “no evidence” for a threshold “below which neuro-developmental effects do not occur.” And while the taconite industry releases less than a ton of mercury into the atmosphere every year, the metal is toxic in extremely small quantities: A fraction of a teaspoon can contaminate a 20-acre lake.
The nation’s six taconite plants, all in this region of Minnesota, are owned by U.S. Steel and Cleveland Cliffs. In May 2023, the Environmental Protection Agency proposed a regulation that would require the companies to cut their mercury emissions by around 30 percent. In order to meet that standard, the companies would have to install equipment that would inject carbon atoms into their industrial chimneys so that the carbon would attach itself to the mercury atoms, making the pollution particles bigger and allowing them to get trapped in a filter before they would be released into the atmosphere. The agency estimates that its regulation would cost the industry $106 million in capital costs and $68 million per year thereafter.
Last month, when the standards were finalized, both companies sued. They argue that the regulation would pose “irreparable harm” to the industry, because of the steep costs of implementation. They also argue that the EPA’s proposed method for reducing mercury pollution would actually be worse for public health, causing a 13 percent increase in the amount of the toxic metal deposited in the local environment.
Jim Pew, a lawyer at Earthjustice who has litigated multiple lawsuits against the EPA for its failure to curb pollution from the taconite industry, pointed out that the costs of implementing the required equipment would be a tiny fraction of the companies’ annual sales, which totaled $40 billion in 2023. Pew noted that U.S. Steel recently initiated a $500 million stock buyback program, the mark of a healthy income revenue stream. As for the companies’ claim that the technology would increase mercury pollution, Pew called it “meritless.” The companies are “relying on a premise they know to be false” — that taconite plants would add the carbon technology without also improving their filtration system.
“I find this reprehensible and shameful,” Pew said. “While it’s claiming that it can’t spend money to clean up historic pollution, U.S. Steel is just handing out money to its shareholders.”

I’m looking at a multi-week trip to a foreign country where my phone won’t work. And my devices are too old to support esim.
I don’t want to do the whole “I know it’s a wonderful opportunity” spiel here, I know I’m being ungrateful. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime trip to a beautiful tropical place. But… I also feel like the whole thing is just gonna be a debilitating 3-week-long school excursion flashback?
I’m essentially using my annual paid leave to grit my teeth for three weeks and risk heatstroke in a place where I can’t drink the water.
Let’s just say it’s… not my ideal holiday.
(Yes, I have a Lifestraw and aquatabs and a well-stocked travel pharmacy and a powerbank with solar panel and copious amounts of bug spray and sunscreen and an all-linen wardrobe -I look like an extra in an Indiana Jones movie- and a travel plug and earplugs and a sleep mask and compression socks for the 17h flight. I’m as prepared as I’ll ever be for this and it doesn’t help.)

SWAMPCON
Swampcon was an absolute delight. This wasn’t my first time going to this convention for I actually had the pleasure of going with my friends last year. As an avid convention attendee, I knew exactly what was in store for me at Swampcon. As a Gator Anime officer, this has been something my friends and fellow officers have been working on and planning ever since last year. I had the opportunity to do almost everything the con had to offer including: visiting maid cafe, touring vendor hall and artist alley, participating in cosplay, playing in the rhythm arcade, attending a vocaloid concert and participating/hosting a panel.
The first thing I did the day of Swampcon was go with my friends in cosplay to the event. I adore cosplay as it's my opportunity to bring not only my headcanon OC designs to life, but also embrace some of my favorite characters in a new way where I can literally live out the fantasies of “he’s just like me for real.” Saturday I went as an original designer for a steampunk character. It's my personal favorite costume and is full of intricate gears and accessories. My friends went as miscellaneous characters ranging from Indiana Jones to Nagito from Danganronpa. Once we got to the venue, we went to see our sister club Maid Cafe perform. The songs they performed were bangers and I even got to see my friends break it down on stage to King which was so entertaining. We got served some treats so I had the S Tier drink known as lemonade and a brownie as the show was going on.
After the maid cafe, I toured vendor hall and artist alley. I bought the cutest and most astute looking goose plush I’ve ever seen. He is beautiful and he’s mine now. I named him Quacavel. The vendor hall was very small compared to an average convention so not too much besides the plushie caught my eye. On the other hand, artists alley was a lot more entertaining and engaging for me. I love buying good art and trinkets despite having no money nor wall space for them, but it's fine don't worry. I got a really neat framed painting of a fox that I put up in my room. The artist selections were awesome and vibrant and had items ranging from candles, to canvases, to preserved animal skeletons.
After some light shopping, I caught up with some old buddies of mine and relaxed in the VIP lounge for a bit until the late afternoon, just in time for the events to begin. We went to a panel where my boy Ahmed rated his favorite muscular women in anime (his first choice was Mikasa) which was not only hilarious in concept, but funny in the sense that it was surreal seeing it hosted in the UF Chamber with about 50+ attentive attendees. We migrated to the Vocaloid concert after the panel ended. Though it wasn’t holoprojected like it was last year, the song selection and dance sequences were absolutely gas and I enjoyed seeing hundreds of vocaloid enjoyers in one room all grooving to Solar System Disco.
The last bit of the day was my own panel: Bad Fanfic Reading (18+). We started prepping for the panel at around 7pm and my partner and I began setting up the powerpoint, music, and reading list. Though none of us had any prior experience with hosting panels at conventions, our time running Anime Club and our overall extroverted natures made it pretty easy. Honestly, I didn’t even feel nervous. Though I won’t go into detail about what we read, I will say we had an insane turnout and we had an amazing time. Our entire room was almost full and we retained a lot of the crowd for the almost 2 hour long session. It was an unforgettable experience that concluded in a trip to Chili’s.
Sunday I did basically everything from Saturday minus the panel stuff. It was a lot more tame since I was tired from the night before. I cosplayed as Red from Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow and even got a fire picture with Team Rocket!
Overall, I had an awesome time and I’m glad I was able to go.

HAVEN - chapter one; the stranger
*(The mature rating is turned on because there will be graphic violence, sexual content and mentions of sexual assault over the course of the story, in future chapters)*
Verity Salvatore hadn't planned on being a leader; she was not the sort who would run for office or even want to be in charge of an entire division at work.  She could take charge, sure. Authority came naturally enough - but failure was a high price to her heart and loss came naturally with leadership responsibilities.  Other people might believe in acceptable losses and collateral damage but Verity carried the memory of every lost soul on her shoulders and they were getting heavy.
She stood on the rooftop of the building they had come to call 'Haven'.  It had been an apartment complex for low income seniors before the outbreak.  It was one big blocky building with three floors and a parking lot which surrounded it on all four sides. It wasn't pretty, but it served their needs. It was a mile or so out of the small town it had served here in southwest Indiana, which also suited their needs. It was isolated enough that they would see any approaching survivors.
They had, back when their group was much larger, made a makeshift fence around the parking lot consisting of abandoned cars and other garbage piled high. Eventually they had fortified that with fences made of salvaged wood and steel. No one had gotten through it since.
The first floor of Haven was uninhabited, they had set a great many booby traps and alarms around doors and windows, which had also been fortified and barricaded. If you knew where the traps were and could get through them in the pitch black, only two of the stairwells were open and accessible.
On the second floor landings there were always guards on duty, armed with rifles and radios. There was nothing of use left on either the first or second floors, every article of clothing, useful piece of equipment and most importantly can of food, had been taken to the third floor where Havens people resided.
There were 24 apartments and a common room, but only 7 of the apartments were currently occupied. There were a total of 9 women and 6 children still here in Haven. Well, Justin was 16 now and considered himself an adult, not a child. Perhaps, in part, because himself and 12 year old Stan were the only males in the building. There had been men, of course, but the last if the had been gone for nearly two years. Verity found life easier without them around.
On the rooftop, they had sown a successful garden in past years, and would be planting again soon.  Coming out of a long winter was far different to Verity now than it had been before the dead began to walk and society had fallen. Winter was as difficult and deadly a time as it had always been, but now people didn't have the protection from it they had enjoyed.
There were the solar panels which made life easier. Not the entire building would be powered by them, but enough to keep them warm, clean and out of total darkness.
On the other end of the rooftop, there was a chicken coop. There were a dozen hens, but their rooster had died over the winter so there would be no chicks this year without a miracle.
"Verity!" Grace, Verity's closest friend called her over to the eastern end of the roof. "I thought it was a rambler at first, but… it seems to be walking with more purpose than that, and he seems to be swinging something in his hand."
Verity held her hand out for the binoculars, and Grace handed them over.
"You're right." She agreed. "It's a guy in a leather jacket. And I think the thing he's holding is a baseball bat."
***********************
Sanctuary had fallen nearly 8 months ago. Negan had slipped past Rick the prick and his pet hillbilly, and he'd fled  west and then north.  He'd survived the winter, barely; completely and utterly alone. Which, if he took the time for any introspection, was his biggest fear.
He'd had nothing to do for much of these months than think. Think and walk. Think and hide. Think about things he had not wanted to look at within himself, within his past. He felt as if he'd aged 20 years since Sanctuary. Would he do things a little differently if he could start over? Yeah, probably. But there was no sense in wallowing in it, he told himself, because no matter how much you wish for it, some things are just impossible.
'What's a wish worth?" His father would have said. "Wish in one hand and shit in the other, and tell me which one fills up first."
Negan had run out of supplies and was just hoping to find something to scavenge before his strength went out when he saw the building - it was oddly out of place in the middle of nowhere, but maybe it was on the edge of French Lick, Indiana. He had checked the map, and when he set his goal - how could he go wrong in a town named French Lick?
As he drew closer to the building, he could see they were well fortified, which could be either very good or very bad for him. Either way, it meant other people. He began to whistle to himself and swing Lucille at his side, his body was weary but he didn't want to seem weak, vulnerable. If you acted like a victim then you would become one.
******************************
Verity had gone inside and grabbed a rifle and asked two of the other women to join her down at the gate.
Lana Parker, a 24 year old firecracker of a girl and Etta Swan who was almost the exact opposite of Lana; and yet they were best friends. Lana thought of Etta as an older sister and Etta felt the same.
"Did you say a man?" Lana asked excitedly as she followed Verity down the stairs.
"Oh my God Lana, do you ever think of anything but sex?" Etta laughed from behind her friend.
"Shut up, both of you. You're making me regret asking for backup." Verity hissed at them as they reached the pitch black first floor. She needed both her flashlight and all her concentration to avoid setting off the traps and alarms.
When they got outside, Lana and Etta ran to the gate to peek out through a slight gap in the fence.
"Oh, he's old!" Lana declared, and Etta slapped her friend up against the back of the head.
"He's not old, he's mature." She corrected.
"Are the two of you ever serious?" Verity scowled at them. Now was not the time.
"Sorry mom." Etta teased.
"Sorry mom." Lana said at nearly the same time.
"I told you to stop calling me that." Verity sighed. She was only ten years older than Etta, and 13 years older than Lana. She peeked out the fence herself at the tall, lanky man with the dark hair and the salt and pepper beard. She climbed up on one of the cars and lay on her belly, steadying her rifle on one hand just over the top of the fence.
"What are you doing?" Lana asked, sounding horrified.
"Don't worry, it's just a warning shot." Verity informed her dryly, just a split second before she pulled the trigger.
**********************
The bullet hit the earth just two feet from where Negan stood and the impact made him jump to the side and nearly stumble. Holy shit they hadn't even warned him!
"Stay where you are!" A woman's voice called out to him from beyond the wall. Negan raised his hands above his head, still grasping Lucille in his right hand, but letting her dangle loosely.  "On your knees!" She ordered.
"Well, fuck." Negan muttered to himself, and, realizing there was no way out, complied with her command. He sank to his knees and put his hands behind his head, Lucille in the wet grass beside him.
*************************
Verity climbed down from her perch and prepared to approach the stranger.
"Tweedle Dee, get up on that car and prepare to cover me.  Tweedle dum, get the gate closed and secured behind me." Verity told her compatriots.  Etta made a face at her nicknames for them, but climbed up to the perch and got her rifle ready.
"You're going alone?" Lana asked, and Verity couldn't tell if she was disappointed to not be going out with her, or was genuinely concerned for Verity's safety. Maybe a little of both, she suspected.
"I'm not alone, you two have my back. But if he's a threat, I want to minimize our losses." She replied.
"There you go sounding like a cop again." Lana teased.
"Some habits are hard to break." Verity replied with a laugh and a shrug. Before the fall, Lana had been in jail in her small Ohio town for possession of marijuana, breaking and entering and evading arrest. Verity had been a cop with the Detroit Schools department of public safety. She and two other sworn officers, plus a handful of campus cops and citizen volunteers made up the only police department dedicated to schools in the state of Michigan.
Verity opened the gate and stepped out, rifle in her hands, a knife unbuckled in its sheath on her belt, and a pistol in her shoulder holster. She knew too well by now that anything could happen.  She was not yet six feet out when the gate closed behind her, and she could hear Lana sliding the locking mechanisms into place.
She approached the stranger cautiously, eyes on the treeline for signs of an ambush.
"Why are you here?" She asked him as she drew near.
"Just passing through." He said, imitating an old spaghetti western.
"Alone?" She asked, her voice quieter as she came to a stop less than ten feet away.
"Just me, myself and I." He agreed, and she couldn't tell if he was being sarcastic.
"Where are you coming from?" She asked dryly, watching him closely now. He looked up at her with watery brown puppy dog eyes, and though he smiled it was only with his lips.
"Like I said, just passing though." He replied, his low voice carrying a hint of a southern accent. Georgia? Virginia? Maybe the Carolinas.  It wasn't a twangy Kentucky or Missourian accent. It was smoother, more sultry.
"What do you want from Haven?" She asked finally.
"From… Haven?"  He asked, looking behind her at the building. He started to chuckle at some inside joke. Or perhaps he was delirious with a fever, she considered.  "Well, that. Is. Perfect." He laughed.
"Have you been bitten?" She asked seriously. He shook his head, the smile reaching the corners of his eyes now, wrinkling them at the corners. Somehow, it still made him seem younger.
Tumblr media
"You offering?" He asked cheerily. Verity racked her shotgun. He forced himself to be serious, but she could still sense his amusement.  "No. No, I haven't been bitten." He replied.
"You can stand up." She said, and it wasn't clear which one was watching the other more closely. He struggled slightly to rise, and Verity could see how weak he was. She had to decide if he was weak because he had been wandering alone, like he said (then she wanted to offer him help). He could, however, be weak from a bite by one of the infected, in which case, bringing him into the building could be disastrous. She offered him her hand up and he reluctantly accepted. She grasped his skin on his arm, above his gloved hand so she could see if he was feverish. He wasn't.
"Can I pick up my bat? Or, at least, will you bring her in with us?" He asked tiredly, gesturing at the barbedwire wrapped baseball bat. It was stained red with blood.
"Her?" Verity asked as she picked the weapon up. "You have been on your own awhile." She quipped, and Negan laughed in surprise.
"Come on. Let's get you sorted out." She said, gesturing at the gate but holding on to the bat, all the same.  She was willing to help, but not stupid enough to trust him.
************
There were two more women waiting just inside the gate, younger women. Negan was taking in every detail. The first woman, the one who had approached him in the field was shorter, maybe 5'4" but strong. She was strong and healthy, younger than Negan by maybe five years. She had light brown hair, longer than her shoulders even in the tight braid she wore it in. She was curvaceous in a way only women over 35 can be - not matronly, but no longer girlish either. He thought she was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen.
As they entered the gate, she turned to him and asked his name.
"I'm… Negan." He informed her, watching for a sign of recognition. There was none, to his great relief.
"I'm Verity." She introduced herself. "Verity Salvatore. This is Lana Parker," she told him, gesturing to the young woman with the messy blonde pixie cut. She was tiny, an inch shorter than Verity and not much more than half her weight. She reminded Negan of tinker-bell, but with tattoos and piercings.
"Hey pops." She greeted him with a loaded smile. She was looking at him like a cat looks at a mouse.
"And this is Etta Swan." Verity pointed at the other young woman as she descended from a car roof, rifle in hand. She was taller than the other two by at least 3 inches; long and lean like a reed or a willow. She had jet black hair and cinnamon skin, but it was something in her eyes that most caught  Negan's attention. Something dark and intense.
"Ettawagszhing Wabizii." She corrected Verity.  Etta was a member of the Ojibwe people who had once been the largest Native American population in Michigan. Truthfully she knew very little about her fathers side of her family and their heritage. The name was the only thing he'd ever given her.
Negan raised his eyebrows, looked down at Etta and smiled.
"Mind if I just call you darlin'?" He said, and although Etta managed to keep her face almost stony, he saw her lips twitch at one corner.
Verity led the way into the building, Negan behind her and the two younger women brought up the rear.
"Stay directly behind me - I don't want to have to reset the traps." Verity told him matter of factly.
"Or clean up the blood." Lana joked.  Or at least, Negan hoped she was joking. He narrowed his eyes and looked around to see different contraptions set all around. It was too dark to see them close enough to identify their potential.
****************
On the landing to the second story, another woman waited with a gun and a radio. She was tall and thin to the point of gaunt, with her hair tied up and covered in a scarf. Her age was hard to determine.
"Sister Sarah." Verity greeted her. She was an ordained nun, and although few of them had managed to maintain their faith, (whatever that might have been) sister Sarah was as devout as ever.
The tall woman eyed Negan a bit nervously, but said nothing as the four of them continued past her up the second set of stairs.
"Sister? Is this some kinda weird like, girl cult?" Negan asked, trying to charm them with his brand of humor.
"Yes, it is. We lure men in and have sex with them until they can't get it up anymore." Lana replied lightly.
"Then we cook them and eat them. There is always another one showing up sooner or later." Etta said dryly. Negan looked like he might soil himself for half a second, but when Etta smiled and winked at him, he managed a nervous laugh.
"Well, there's not much of me to eat these days. Maybe you'll have to fatten me up a bit first." He joined in the jokes. Verity frowned at the three of them but remained silent. When they reached the door to the top floor, she turned and pulled out a pair of handcuffs. Negan raised his eyebrows at her.
"Do we need those?" He asked.
"No, they're just for fun." Etta replied and both young women snickered.
"Yes, there are vulnerable people here, people who have been hurt and there are…" Verity was about to say children when the door burst open and two of the children stood there, staring at them.
Stanley, who was 12 and Olivia who was 5. Olivia's eyes grew wide at the sight of the man, and she stepped back in fright. Stanley wrapped his arms around her from behind and held her safely.
"It's ok, Olivia. It's just a man. If Verity brought him, he must be a friend." He told her softly.
"I don't know if she remembers the last time she saw a man." Verity mused.
"Wait… there are no other men here?" Negan asked disbelievingly.
"Well, there's Stanley here." Verity smiled at the adolescent. "And Justin, who is 16." She used Negan's shock at this discovery to distract him while she cuffed his hands together.
"Just until everybody is sure we can trust you." She assured him. There were the sounds of tiny, unsteady feet in the tiled hallway, and when he looked up, Negan saw a toddler, no older than a year, with her arms held up high in the air to either balance herself or celebrate the fact that she was escaping from her caregiver.
"Stanley, what is Vida doing out in the hallway?" Verity inquired. She sounded disappointed in someone.
"Justin and Amari were watching her." Stanley explained defensively. Verity sighed and scooped the baby girl up in one arm, still grasping a pistol in the other hand.
"What's on his face?" Olivia, the five year old asked Stanley in a loud whisper. Negan chuckled and stroked his bushy beard.
"I haven't had much reason to shave, I guess." He said with a crooked smile, his eyes softening at the sight of the children. It was so good to be around others again, he was suddenly afraid he might get a bit weepy. He straightened up and drew on what little strength he had left to control his emotions.
"We'll talk about it later," Verity assured the little girl as she shooed them back into the apartment from whence they had come.
"Justin!" She called, and a tall, muscular youth with shaggy blonde hair and cheekbones that could cut glass appeared, shirtless in the entryway of the apartment.  He was the sort of kid who would be prom king, star quarterback of the football team. He looked at Negan coldly, and drew himself up as tall as he could without literally standing on tip toe.  Negan could practically smell the testosterone.
"When you're in charge, you need to be responsible for the little ones. They were all out in the hallway just now." Verity scolded him, setting little Vida down on the carpet and patting her diapered behind.
"Amari is in charge." Justin argued, his eyes never leaving Negan.
"You both are. Now please keep them in there. We need to figure some things out." She closed the door between them and waited until she heard it lock.
"So how many of you are living here?"Negan inquired with sincere interest. His curiosity was piqued.
Verity considered for a long moment whether or not to be truthful, but their biggest secret had already been spilled when he saw the children.
"Eight women, five children, and two teenagers."
"That's it?" He was amazed that so few people had managed to maintain control over a building like this.
"That's what's left of us, but we're strong and well equipped." She replied, not willing to seem vulnerable.
"Right, I mean you said there were no men here, but there is a baby so there was one here less than two years ago." He said in his old, jovial voice. He heard the younger woman snicker and giggle, but Verity was stoic.
"We're doing fine on our own." She assured him dryly. She led him down to the far end of the hall, as far as possible from the apartment the children were in. It was tidy, if a bit minimalistic and dusty. Compared to what Negan had lived in for the past few months, it was the mother fucking Ritz-Carlton.
Verity unlocked his cuffs and gestured for him to enter.
"You can stay here for a bit, get your rest and some food. That's all I'm willing to offer at the moment."
"Thats more than generous. I'm as happy as a pig in shit!" He declared with a toothy grin. Verity directed Lana to collect some fresh clothes and towels for him, and Etta to get some food. When they were gone, Verity stared him down, her pistol still gripped firmly in hand.
"I've shown you mercy, today - others would have killed you before let you in. I assure you, all mercy and kindness will disappear if you hurt any of the women or children here. If you so much as look at someone too hard and make them slightly uncomfortable, I will slice off your balls and put them in a Mason jar on my mantle as a warning to any future man we see fit to allow in."
For a minute, Negan thought she was going to start poking him in the chest. He managed not to smile, no matter how much his reflex was to grin at her.
"Hey, I am a stand-up guy. I have nothing but respect for you and what you've built here at… Haven, did you call it?" He told her earnestly. She nodded at his question. "Why, it's exactly the sort of sanctuary I've been praying for." He smiled at her.
Lana and Etta returned with a treasure trove of clothing, deodorant, soap, even a razor. There was a grocery bag full of canned goods and best of all a plate of fresh, hot fried chicken with a pickle and mashed potatoes. He accepted the gifts gratefully, and even when he heard the door lock from the outside, he was too happy to be worried. He ate the food faster than he wanted - he intended to savor it, but he was too hungry to hold back. Once his stomach was sated, he moved to the shower. This was a luxury he enjoyed more slowly. He couldn't help but wonder, a community of all women, a secure facility with running water, electricity and fresh food - had Rick Grimes actually killed him? Because this could be heaven.

INDIANA
2024 Aug 28 (Wed) – We packed up and left Elkhart at 9:40.  It was just 2 and ½ hours to the Jefferson Township Park Campground in New Haven.  This is a small county fairground with maybe 6 to 8 camp spots.  We have electric and water hookups.  There is a dump station but for one night, I don’t think we will need it.  The campground is kind of far from town so we didn’t go anywhere.  And we don’t really need gas since we only drove 113 today and will drive 130 tomorrow to Ohio.
2024 Aug 27 (Tue) – The temperatures have shot up.  It was 93 degrees today!  I guess there’s some kind of system passing through the Midwest.  We spent the day inside, working on caravan and national muster prep.
The weirdest thing happened while we were doing the laundry.  At wash time, I put my bra in a net bag.  When the wash is done, I remove it and put it aside while the rest of the wash goes in the dryer.  I take it back to the trailer and hang it in the shower to dry.  Well, after I took my bra out of the washer, put it aside, and put the clothes in the dryer, I turned to get the bag and found it missing.  We looked between the washers, on the floor, and even in back of the washer but it couldn’t be found anywhere.  We even stopped the dryers and looked through the clothes there, but nothing.  After the clothes were dry and we had them back and folded at the RV, there was still no bra.  It’s as if it grew legs and just walked away.  Very weird.
2024 Aug 26 (Mon) – We packed up and left at 7:40 a.m. to bring our RV to Fun Town RV.  They will be looking at 3 issues we have with the rig and, hopefully, fix them.  We have a leak in the bedroom, the rubber seal on the living room slide keeps working itself out when we drive, and the solar control panel has an error code that we have not been able to clear.
While the rig was at the dealer, we went out to breakfast.  It took 3 tries before we found a place that was open.  It looked really skeevy outside but it was quite nice inside.  The meal was plentiful and good.  Afterward, we drove back to the campground and sat in the truck, waiting for a call to come pick up our RV.  At lunchtime, we drove to a Steak N Shake for burgers.  Sheba got a taste so she was happy, too.
We returned to the dealer at 4 p.m.  The mechanic told us he broke his key in the lock and so, he replaced the lock on the door.  He then told us what he did.  The slide had left-over glue and tar that was catching on the rubber seal.  He tried to scrape it all off then covered it with silver tape.  He thinks that solved the problem.  We’ll see the next time we ride on down the road.  The mechanic then told us that he found a small hole in the bedroom slide that might have been the cause of the leak.  He repaired that.  Lastly, he found a reset button on the bottom of the solar control box in the basement.  It is not easily visible and he had to call the vendor to discover it.  We will put a label there so we will know from now on.  He also told us that we need to keep the area clear so it can get some air.  We currently have it packed full with all the stuff we will be donating to SMART.  Paul later moved the stuff around.
2024 Aug 25 (Sun) – We drove 108 miles from Zeeland, MI, to the Elkhart Campground.  This is a very nice campground.  I even recommended it to Nita, who is looking for a site for the 2026 national muster.  Hopefully, they pick this campground.  It is laid out nice.  Has a nice smattering of trees.  Have over 350 campsites with full hookups and pull through sites.  The laundry room has 8 washers and 8 dryers, all in working order.
After set up, we drove to Fun Town RV to see where it is.  We will be bringing the RV there tomorrow to (hopefully) get a few things fixed on the rig.  When we got back, we did some laundry.

Powering the Heartland A Deep Dive into Midwestern Engines
Tumblr media
Introduction:
The Midwestern region of the United States has long been dubbed the "Heartland," not just for its central geographic location but also for its vital role in powering the nation's economy. From agriculture to manufacturing, the Mid West Engine serves as an engine driving growth and innovation. In this exploration, we delve into the various sectors that constitute the backbone of the Midwestern economy, examining the factors that power its industries and sustain its resilience.
Agricultural Powerhouses:
At the heart of the Heartland's economy lies its robust agricultural sector. States like Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana boast expansive farmlands that produce a significant portion of the nation's corn, soybeans, and wheat. The advent of mechanization and technological advancements has revolutionized farming practices, increasing efficiency and output. Tractors, harvesters, and other agricultural machinery have become indispensable tools, powered by both traditional fossil fuels and, increasingly, renewable sources such as biodiesel and electric engines. This dual approach reflects the Midwest's commitment to sustainability while maintaining productivity.
Manufacturing Might:
Beyond agriculture, the Midwest is renowned for its manufacturing prowess. Cities like Detroit, once synonymous with the automotive industry, have diversified their production lines to include aerospace, machinery, and technology. The manufacturing sector relies heavily on energy-intensive processes, driving demand for electricity and natural gas. However, an increasing focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy integration is reshaping the landscape. Solar panels adorn factory rooftops, wind turbines dot the horizon, and smart technologies optimize energy usage, demonstrating a shift towards greener manufacturing practices.
Energy Innovation:
In recent years, the Midwest has emerged as a hub for energy innovation. States like Michigan and Ohio are investing in renewable energy projects, harnessing the power of wind, solar, and biofuels to diversify their energy portfolios. This transition is not only driven by environmental concerns but also economic opportunities. Renewable energy investments create jobs, attract investment, and bolster local economies. Furthermore, initiatives to modernize infrastructure, improve grid resilience, and promote energy storage are enhancing the region's energy security and reliability.
Transportation Networks:
As the crossroads of the nation, the Midwest relies heavily on its transportation networks to facilitate the movement of goods and people. Railways, highways, and waterways crisscross the region, connecting producers to markets and consumers to essential services. The transportation sector is a significant consumer of energy, predominantly derived from petroleum-based fuels. However, efforts to electrify fleets, develop alternative fuels, and enhance transit systems are underway, aiming to reduce emissions and enhance mobility while ensuring the region remains a vital artery of commerce.
Conclusion:
The Heartland's engines are fueled by a diverse array of resources, from fertile soils to cutting-edge technologies. Agriculture and manufacturing continue to drive economic growth, supported by a commitment to innovation and sustainability. The Midwest's transition towards renewable energy sources signals a progressive shift in its energy landscape, reflecting both environmental stewardship and economic pragmatism. As the Heartland powers forward, balancing tradition with transformation, its resilience and adaptability remain fundamental strengths, ensuring its continued vitality in an ever-evolving world.
